Driving and Parking

Leave way earlier than you think you need to.
From LA, the drive is about 2.5 hours with no traffic. On festival Friday, budget 4-5 hours. The I-10 East turns into a parking lot past Palm Springs and there's no shortcut. Leave before noon or accept your fate.

Preferred parking is worth it if you can get it.
It cuts your walk from the parking lot to the entrance from 20+ minutes to about 5. After 12 hours on your feet, that difference is enormous. It sells out fast, but check the resale market closer to the festival.

Gas up before you hit the desert.
Fill your tank in Beaumont, Banning, or Cabazon. Those are the last real towns before festival traffic. The gas stations in Indio near the venue have long lines and higher prices every year. Don't be the person running on fumes in a traffic jam.

Know which lot you're assigned to.
Coachella has multiple parking lots and the routes to each are different. Check your parking pass carefully and follow the specific lot signage. Going to the wrong lot means circling back through festival traffic, which can easily add an hour.

Shuttles and Rideshare

The official shuttles are genuinely good.
They run from multiple stops in the valley and drop you close to the entrance. Air-conditioned, relatively quick, and you skip the parking headache entirely. The pass pays for itself in avoided stress. Book early because popular stops sell out.

Uber/Lyft surge pricing after the headliner is brutal.
Expect $80-150 for a ride that normally costs $15. The designated rideshare pickup area also involves a 15-20 minute walk from the exit. If you're doing rideshare, leave during the second-to-last act or wait 45 minutes after the festival ends for surge to drop. There is no in-between.

Set your pickup pin precisely.
The rideshare lot GPS can be confusing with 10,000 people all requesting rides at once. Screenshot the exact pickup zone location beforehand. Have your driver call you instead of texting. Cell data gets spotty but calls usually work.

Carpooling with your group saves money and sanity.
One car, one parking pass, everyone splits gas. Designate a sober driver or plan to stay until you're good to go. The campground parking is included with camping passes, so if you're camping, this is a no-brainer.

Timing Your Arrival

Gates open at noon, but there's no reason to rush.
The first acts don't start until mid-afternoon. Arriving at 2-3pm means shorter entry lines, cooler temperatures for the walk in, and you haven't burned three hours standing around. Peak crowd arrives 4-6pm.

Sunday arrival is the easiest day.
Fewer people, shorter lines, more relaxed security. If you're doing single-day passes, Sunday gives you the smoothest experience from a logistics standpoint. Friday is chaos by comparison.

The exit is the real bottleneck.
Getting in is manageable. Getting out after the headliner is where things get ugly. The entire parking lot empties at once. Either leave 20 minutes before the final act ends, or bring a blanket and sit in the grass for 45 minutes while the crowd clears. That patience saves you an hour in the lot.

Know the re-entry policy.
You can leave and re-enter the festival grounds with your wristband. This is great for campers. Duck back to camp for a nap, a shower, or a real meal, then head back in refreshed for the evening sets. Use this. Most people forget they can.

Put your phone on Low Power Mode from the start.
With 125,000 phones competing for cell towers, your phone burns battery searching for signal constantly. Airplane mode between sets saves the most. At minimum, kill background app refresh, lower brightness, and turn off Wi-Fi scanning. You need that last 10% to find your group at midnight, not to scroll Instagram at 3pm.
